THE C-SCAPE SHACK |
|
|
|
The “C-Scape”
Dune Shack was constructed in the early 1940’s by Eddie and Mary Nunes,
Provincetown natives who also gave it its name. It was built from two
different shacks—one coming all the way from Brockton, MA and the other
originally located near what is now the Race Point Ranger Station. Interestingly,
C-Scape is the only surviving dune shack located within the original
Provincelands—which has been public land since Colonial times. In 1978,
C-Scape and other nearby shacks were relocated to their current sites
from the eroding barrier dune.-
Today, C-Scape is one of 17 shacks located within the Peaked Hill Bars National Register Historic District. The primitive nature of the structure—no electricity, indoor plumbing, or telephone—and its physical isolation allow for uninterrupted solitude and refuge. The dwelling is a 1 1/2 story, three- room structure, including a studio and wood stove. It has a propane cooking stove and small refrigerator, and a composting toilet. C-Scape residencies are open to the general public; we also have special programs: 1. Artist-in-Residence: Program for visual artists. Three 3-week stays in summer, with one including a $500 Fellowship. Artists must participate in the National Seashore's Interpretive Program, 2 times per week, in which a group of up to 10 visitors will visit the shack. The artist must also donate one piece of artwork to the Provincetown Community Compact. Residencies will be awarded by the Project Review Committee. (Students not eligible.) This is a highly competitive program. If applying for this program please include: One page (or less) written statement addressing how the residency will enhance your work and further the public understanding of the dune environment; a CD of 5 DIGITAL images of your work, jpegs preferred, (you may send photos of work instead of digital images, no slides please), with description/title of work, medium and date; resume; and a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of support materials. The postmark deadline for Artist-in-Residence applications is February 15, 2008. 2. Writers Residencies. We offer two one-week, subsidized residencies for writers of ALL genres, and we have eliminated the usual process of selection based on jurors views on the quality of the writing. This process eliminates lots of time, paper work and more importantly, creates a level playing field for neophyte and accomplished writers. We employ a simple lottery. STEP ONE: Send us your name, address and email and we will put your name in a hat and select twenty names. STEP TWO: We will contact the twenty selected writers and ask that each send up to three pages of writing, along with an artist statement and/or a resume. We will then place the names of those submissions in a hat and select the two resident writers. Deadline: February 15, 2008. 3. Community Residency: Open to any member of the general public, nonprofit organizations and businesses. One week stays in the spring and fall. No more than 2 adults may stay in the Shack at one time. Based on response, weeks will be allocated by a lottery for each week. Please indicate your selected weeks in order of preference (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice, etc.). The postmark deadline for Community Residencies is February 15, 2008. 4. Friends of C-Scape Residency: Three weeks have been set aside for selection by lottery from the Friends supporters: May 19 thru May 26; September 22 thru September 29; November 3 thru November 10 |
