Swim for Life welcomes Schooner Regatta
A Provincetown Harbor Festival? The idea is becoming reality as the Swim for Life welcomes the The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta as part of its traditional post-Labor Day event. The weekend begins with the Celebration of Life Concert on Friday and ends with the awards dinner for the Regatta, with a weekend bursting with the Swim, Mermaid Brunch, Harbor Lights, and the Regatta’s crew party, caption’s breakfast, Parade of Sale and Race.
Celebrating Provincetown Harbor ? its ecology, culture and economics ? was the impetus for the creation of the first Swim for Life in 1988. Except for a faltering Blessing of the Fleet, little attention was paid to the harbor at the time. That has dramatically changed with the revived Blessing and Portuguese Festival, a new pier and pier corporation, and the fast ferry service. The organizers are hoping that the collaboration of the fourth annual Regatta and the 18th annual Swim for Life will create the synergy for a town-wide spectacle. The event is being co-promoted in publicity and on websites: www.swim4life.org and www.provincetownschoonerrace.com.
From September 9-11 the Harbor will be activated with hundreds of yellow neon-capped swimmers, dozens of kayakers and safety boats, and sail boats and schooners of every class. If a storm postpones the Swim to Sunday ? the Regatta Sail ? organizers have developed a plan to coordinate both events, with adequate backup from the Harbormaster, U.S. Coast Guard and numerous support and transport boats. The Regatta is organizing a team of swimmers from its ranks for the Swim for Life.
The Swim for Life’s 1999 t-shirt design featured a white line block print by Bill Evaul of the famed Rose Dorothea, celebrating both Provincetown’s Centennial as an arts colony and its fabled maritime history. One of the Regatta’s awards is the Rose Dorethea Cup.
The 18th Annual Provincetown Harbor Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, a fundraiser for AIDS, women’s health and youth, is scheduled for September 10, 2005. This year’s event begins with the traditional Friday night Celebration of Life Concert at the Meeting House presented by John Thomas. The Pool Splash will run concurrently with the harbor Swim on Saturday for those who choose to swim in a pool or are “harborly-challenged.” The second annual Provincetown Harbor Lights, created by Ewa Nogiec, planned for dusk, will conclude the weekend. The 2005 t-shirts, designed by Sally Brophy, are available at Venture Athletics Outdoor Shop, 306 Commercial Street, Unit 3, and at the Firehouse next to town hall staffed by the AIDS Support Group.
Beneficiaries of the Swim for Life include Helping Our Women, the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Outer Cape Health Services, Cape and Islands Gay Straight Youth Alliance and the Provincetown AIDS HIV History Project. Sponsors to date include the Provincetown Banner, Mike's Movies/Boston, Paul Mitchell, the Boatslip Resort, Far Land Provisions, Provincetown Visitor Services Board and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
The Swim for Life is produced by the Provincetown Community Compact, Inc. Registration on September 10 for kayakers and safety boaters begins at 8:30 am at the Boatslip Resort beach, 161 Commercial Street, with swimmer registration on the deck at 9:30 am. Swimmers will be transported to Long Point for the 11:00 am start.
