PRAYER RIBBONS OFFER VISUAL WITNESS TO SWIM FOR
LIFE
Prayer Ribbons. From the lofty ceiling of the Meeting
House to the decks of the Boatslip and across Commercial
Street, these 6-foot long, inscribed colored ribbons
will once again be a dominant visual presence at
the Swim for Life weekend. The 20th Annual Provincetown
Harbor Swim for Life is set for Saturday, September
8, 2007.
The Prayer Ribbons were initiated in 1993 to provide
a visual witness to the swimmers as they crossed
the harbor from Long Point to the Boatslip, each
swimmer with his or her own personal images, hopes
and fears. All are invited to write the name of
someone they love and wish to celebrate in their
lives, some who may have died from AIDS.The ribbons
commemorate the devastation that AIDS has done to
our community, but they also challenge us to live
our lives more fully and joyfully. They create a
visual statement about Provincetown as a community,
its contradictions, its conflicts, its possibilities.
Concertgoers at the festive Celebration of Life
Concert the night before the Swim will have the
opportunity to select one or more colored ribbons
and inscribe them with names or messages. These
will then be gathered and fastened to a line which
will be strung up in the Meeting House for the free
concert, produced in association with the Swim by
John Thomas.
The Prayer Ribbons will be transported from the
Meeting House to the expansive deck of the Boatslip
for Saturday's Swim, where the public will once
again have the opportunity to participate and add
to the display. |
