SWIM FOR LIFE VOLUNTEERS WELCOME
Whether one prefers a low profile assignment such
as set-up and clean up (always the most difficult
to fill), or the emotion and drama of the finish
line, the 20th Annual Provincetown Harbor Swim for
Life & Paddler Flotilla is looking for 150 volunteers
to support the hundreds of swimmers, kayakers and
paddlers for this post-Labor Day festival. The committee
for the legendary Mermaid Brunch catered by Far
Land Provisions, back at the Boatslip Resort, will
need a dozen volunteers, and is already meeting.
It includes: Beth O'Rourke, Brian Cabral, Lee Brenner,
and Rosemary Hillard.
The Swim is fortunate to have seasoned and dedicated
volunteers to fill key positions. Char Priolo was
courageous in taking over as head cheerleader in
2000 after the untimely death of David Asher. Jim
Rann and Steve Roderick organize the 20 registrars
and money managers; and The Admirable Jan Kelly,
along with support from the Harbor Master's office,
will captain the 60 volunteers, 35 water craft and
50+ kayakers who will transport swimmers across
the harbor to Long Point, and patrol the Swim route
for swimmer safety. Swimmer safety is always the
most important concern of the Swim and we can always
count on the U.S. Coast Guard and the Provincetown
Rescue Squad for their professional safety net.
Volunteer
help is also needed to manage the loan of free wet
suits to those desiring them. The Swim has over
125 wetsuits, loaned to swimmers after they register.
There is the much sought after job of greasing swimmers'
bodies with Vaseline for thermal protection. Or
join the 40 timekeepers, huggers, and provision
volunteers at the finish line supervised by nurse
George Libone. A half dozen volunteers are being
sought to distribute Prayer Ribbons and sell t-shirts
at John Thomas' free, high-spirited Celebration
of Life Concert on Friday evening at 8:00 pm at
the Universalist Meeting House, and at the Boatslip
on Saturday.
Prayer Ribbons -- 5-foot long colored ribbons --
are inscribed with the names of loved ones we wish
to celebrate in our lives, both those who are deceased
and those living. They are strung up at all weekend
events as a witness to our community. Also needed
are volunteers for clothes check, lost and found,
and T-shirt sales. And the list goes on: hot tea
and water, awards tabulation, and Swim results.
None of this could be done without the assistance
of the staff at the Boatslip, the Meeting House,
and the Cape Cod National Seashore, where the Swim
begins at Long Point Lighthouse.
Also, if you would like to volunteer your help to
promote the Swim in your community, let us know.
Thank You.
